Charles L. Terrell first bought his house and blacksmith shop in 1889. His shop was standing in 1833 and was used first as a cabinet shop. It was listed as a brick structure. It was purchased in 1838 by several businessmen in the town. One was James W. Mason the builder of 420 Valley Street and former owner of Old Hall. Another was John Blair, father of Joseph Blair the owner of the Victorian house on Jackson Street.

Across the street from this shop stood a duplex structure that Terrell may have rented out.

Terrell bought another blacksmith shop, also of brick construction in 1896. This shop was aid to have fronted on Valley Street. It stood at the site of 724 Valley Street. This shop had its origins back in 1833 also. In the 1920 census a John Shepherd was listed a blacksmith, but white, and may have lived nearby.

In 1918, Terrell bought another house that stood near 172 Warren Street at public auction to settle an estate . This house dated back to 1830; timbers from this were used to build 160 and 172 Warren Street in the early 1930′s by Dr. Luthur R. Stinson.

A community spring was used by all these properties. It is now covered over in the yard of the “blue house” on Warren Street. I recall talking with a former residence of the neighborhood, who has since passed on, how he had to get water each morning for his mother from that spring.

Dr. Stinson started to buy these properties in 1938. A lengthy court case ensued to settle Terrell’s estate. The same could be said of his purchase of the Ross house. He bought a lot of property in this manner. In 1949 he built “Woodside” a collection of five houses outside of “Town” and relocated all the residents to those houses. The last occupant of those houses left several years ago. They sit empty now.
